Get up earlier and set bedtime for kids

My most productive days are when I get an early start. You can choose to do this however works best for you. You can wake up before your kids that way you can work on your to-do list for the day that way you will be ready to tend to their needs when they wake up. Another option is to have them wake up earlier. This way they can knock out most of their school work for the day which will then leave you with more time to work on things while you kids engage in independent play.

How you choose to do this will depend on your family schedule and the age of your kids. It is also important to make sure the kids go to bed on time. This will free up more time for you to have a relaxing moment to yourself or to finish up anything that you needed to get done for the day. I like to wake up an hour or two before my kids do to get a head start on work, that way once they wake up I can make their mornings all about them.

Set work hours

My work hours are technically from 8 am-5 pm but I work from home so I do have some flexibility. I do most of my work from 6 am-10 am and the rest of the day I focus on homeschooling my kids and maintaining the house. If you have some flexibility with your work hours think about what time would be best for you to set your work hours. If you don’t have any flexibility with your work hours it’s totally fine because homeschooling is flexible. You can homeschool for a few hours on the weekend or whenever you are off of work.

Create a schedule

.

Create a daily schedule that you can stick with. There should be a time set for all of your most important priorities. That way you will be able to complete the most important tasks that you have set regarding your work scheduled, and your kid’s homeschool schedule. Having a schedule keeps me on task. I know how long it will take me to complete each task that way I can adequately plan out what I will do in a day. If I am having a forgetful day I know that I can always refer back to my schedule and check off my tasks as I complete them.

Just Say no

If you work from home you may notice that many people may not understand that you are still busy because you still have a job to do. That is the case with me. Because I work from home I am sometimes the go-to person when others need me.

I don’t mind it and in fact, I am always there to support others. This is one of the reasons why having a prioritized schedule is so important. There will be times where you are just too busy to be involved in helping out with extracurricular activities and that’s ok. If you are asked to help out with an extracurricular activity then ask yourself will it interfere with your priorities and if so, it’s ok to just say no.

Grocery delivery or pickup

This makes life so much easier. I just order my groceries in advance and schedule a pick-up time and when I arrive they just load up my groceries in my car. There is a small fee for grocery delivery but grocery pickup is free and available at most grocery locations. You don’t have to spend an hour in the grocery store only to have to wait in a long line for groceries with inpatient kids. Grocery pick-up is a huge time saver.

Use your child interest as a guide

Start with your child’s talents and interests and build on that. There are parents that may struggle with their child’s lack of desire when it comes to learning but that can be cured by making learning fun. Use their interests as a learning tool.

If your child struggles with reading and does not like reading books then you can start by getting them to read their favorite story. My daughter loves to watch Doc McStuffins and Fancy Nancy so I bought her the Fancy Nancy series. She also loves to play with slime so she asked me for a science kit so that she can make it herself. Your child’s passions can be used as a powerful learning tool.

Don’t Try to Make Homeschool Like traditional school

Homeschool is not traditional school. You do not have to create an elaborate school schedule that is 8 hours long. Traditional school is long for a reason and they cannot give your child the 1:1 time and attention that they are getting with homeschool. It is common for a child to homeschool for 3-4 hours a day. You have the freedom to make up your child’s school schedule according to what works best for you and your child.

Go easy on yourself on the stressful days

Cut back on busy work  Prevent yourself from being overwhelmed on your busy days by cutting back on everything else. If I get tied up with my work I’m not going to run myself ragged trying to keep up with every little thing.

I do the best I can and make sure the house is neat and clutter-free, and I make sure that my daughter does her independent school work and we reserve her other work for another time. I gotta love the flexibility of homeschooling! Most of her school work she does independently except for her writing. She can trace on her own but I help her with free handwriting.

Give them age appropriate quiet activities

Giving your kids quiet activities that they can engage in safely and independently is a lifesaver. I do this when I need uninterrupted time for a work meeting. I plan out activities that my kids can do independently and activities that they can engage in together this will prolong the amount of time that I have to myself to get things done. I also look forward to my son’s nap time as well.  You have to create opportunities to keep them occupied so that you can quickly and efficiently get your work done. This will give you more time to devote to them.

Plan easy meals

Meal planning is the busy mom’s must-have for organized homeschooling. I might make an elaborate meal occasionally but I am known for whipping up something quick and tasty for the family. Meal planning also reduces eating out which is not a healthy option and is also a time-waster because you have to stop what you are doing to go and get the food. I do treat my kids by eating out here and there but easy meal planning is fast, affordable, and healthy.

Think about online school

I started my daughter off with traditional homeschooling for Pre-K and Kindergarten but once she started first grade, I needed to switch to something that was easier for me. Online school made homeschooling easy for all of us.

I enrolled her into Acellus Academy. She has a complete curriculum and her own teachers. I am so happy that we made the switch. I know that my daughter is getting an excellent education. It is fully accredited and she can complete her school work independently. When I am working she does her school work. This has been one of the most impactful tips for me.
